World history through an equity lens
welcome
Did you know that 'Timbuktu' was part of an empire in West Africa with a university capable of housing 25,000 students and had one of the largest libraries in the world?
Did you know that the majority of Spain's population was Muslim for over 700 years? Or the reasons as to why Christianity accelerated the fall of the Roman empire?
This website is a journey that explores the rise and fall of empires through time, and ultimately, the history of humanity and human behaviour. We were both disappointed that after beginning this journey of world history, the majority of what we traditionally learned was never contextualized in a way that allowed us to grasp the current political climate of our time.
As Black medical students that have developed in the Canadian education system, we feel as if our individual histories, as well as many other marginalized populations have been misrepresented through time.
We hope that you enjoy this learning experience alongside us! Each map will have a yellow Black Medical Students' Association (BMSA) symbol which will direct you to an interesting educational video.
Although this course is not all-encompassing, its purpose is meant to provide you with reference points which we hope will lead you to further individual exploration. These videos are meant to provide a general foundation of world history in order to understand the patterns of our world today. They are interesting, informative, and relay information based on the most accurate records that we have.
When we know better, we do better!
